1. Include links to relevant social media profiles. Odds are that the employer is going to Google you anyway, so you might as well be upfront about your social presence. Add links to any outlets you use for industry purposes, liked your LinkedIn profile or professional Twitter account. Worried about them coming across something not-so-flattering? Do yourself a favor and remove it before it becomes a problem.
2. Create a resume for robots, not humans. Most of the time, you’ll be uploading your resume to a database. A lot of companies have software that will sift through and sort resumes for keywords. Pull words and phrases from the job description to make sure your resume lands in the virtual “yes” pile. You can create a second, more creative resume to hand out to people you meet.
3. If you have a LinkedIn profile, it may serve as your online resume. It may seem strange to add personal information to a professional resume, but by talking about how you run for charity or write a travel blog, you may connect with other professionals on a personal level, which improves networking.
4. Don’t be afraid of being creative, especially if you’re looking for a job in a creative industry. Have too much information to squeeze into a single page? Add an infographic. Feel like text isn’t the best way to convey your skills? Make a five minute professional video, upload it to YouTube, and add the link to your resume. Thinking outside the box is perfectly fine, so long as you know that potential employers will appreciate it.
